Alotau and the coastal strip either side played a pivotal role in the WWII Battle of Milne Bay and there are several memorials and relics. We begin our guided tour at the Top Town Lookout, and discover the connection between Alotau and the original provincial capital, Samarai. During our tour, we will find out how the Battle of Milne Bay changed the world as they knew it and why the whole town was moved to Alotau. Next, we visit Cameron Secondary School, the provinces first established high school in 1967. Receive a warm welcome from the students and have the chance to chat with them for an authentic insight into daily life. Heading back towards the town centre and the main market we will have time to wander through the bustling markets as our local guide points out the many varieties of fresh local produce and crafts available.

We will have a morning tour of the local area visiting the local church and the market. Kiriwina is relatively flat, with a rim of low hills (uplifted coral reefs) along the eastern shore. The central plain is intensely cultivated, since most villagers are subsistence farmers who rely on their crops of yam, sweet potato, taro and cassava.
